Minor Peewees Start Season Well
The Maitland Ice Sharks Minor Peewee Team started off the tournament season with a respectable 2 win and 2 loss effort in the 3rd Annual Northshore Challenge Cup.

The first game of the tournament saw the Ice Sharks face off against the Chatham-Kent Cyclones.  The Cyclones poured on the pressure right off the start and some fantastic goaltending by Daniel Dekoning kept the Cyclones off the scoreboard until the second period.  The Ice Sharks were able to answer when Payton Dunlop popped one in after some solid work down low by Andrew Gooding.  The Cyclones went ahead 2-1 to start the third but again the Ice Sharks answered when Gooding scored on the power play from Taylor Moir.  Unfortunately, the Cyclones were able to pop another but again the Ice Sharks wouldn't quit as Brody Tenpas banged home a rebound after Tyler Hak and Dunlop created some chances.  The tie would not prevail however as the Cyclones buried a late marker to win the game 4-3.

The second game matched the Ice Sharks against the Bluewater Sharks.  Unlike Game 1 it was the Ice Sharks that poured on the pressure early and often.  Derrick Bernath got the ball rolling with a power play backhander from Moir and Drew Gross.  Keigan Goetz made it 2-0 with a marvellous rush into the Sharks end and a beautiful finish.  The second period started with Moir notching another backhander on a rebound from a Bernath shot.  The Sharks then got on the board to make it 3-1 but then Dunlop scored on rebound from a Tenpas blast.  The second period ended 4-2 as Bluewater scored a late one.  The only goal in the third was a Dunlop marker after some fine work by Hak and Tenpas down low.  Eric Ryan shut the door the rest of the way as the game ended in a 5-2 victory.

The third game was played on Saturday against the Zone Training.  The Ice Sharks fell behind early as the Zone scored twice in the first.  Bernath was able to make the score 2-1 from Tenpas and a long lead pass from Carter Stewart.  Tenpas opened the scoring in the second on a goal mouth scramble after attempts by Logan Lammerant and Dunlop.  Lammerant then put the Ice Sharks up 3-2 on the power play with assists to Brett Carter and Hak.  Dunlop found himself in the right place at the right time to start the third as he sent the Ice Sharks up 4-2 with an assist from Gooding.  Dekoning made some unbelievable stops late as the Zone scored one more but could not tie the Ice Sharks.  The final was 4-3 for the Ice Sharks.

The Ice Sharks needed to win their fourth game to guarantee a trip to the semis but they ran into a very determined Northern Sticks squad.  Minus a couple of players the Ice Sharks popped the first as Hak deflected a Lammerant bullet.  The Sticks answered with one of their own on Ryan and the first period ended 1-1.  The Ice Sharks started the second off right when Dunlop finished a play in front from Hak and Gooding.  The second period ended with the Ice Sharks in front    2-1 but the Sticks came out strong in the third with three consecutive tallies.  The Ice Sharks would not quit however as Dunlop tipped in a Keegan McLelland pass to make the last minute of play very exciting.  Try as they might, the Ice Sharks could not get a goal to tie the game.

With a 2-2 record the Ice Sharks had to sit out the semis in this tournament but will look to improve their chances in two weeks at the Brantford Classic.
