Spring Season Wrap-up
The PeeWee Maitland Ice Shark girls wrapped up their Spring season at the Canlan Victoria Day Classic this past weekend.

The Spring season commenced the weekend of May 10-12 at the Regional Express Tournament. This tournament features some top competition and the Sharks would eventually lose a tough game in the final to the host Regional Express Gold.

On Friday, the girls got off to a jittery start and battled Player First to a 1-1 tie. While outshooting Player First through most of the game, they could only manage one goal against a strong goalie.

In the late Friday match, the girls found their scoring touch and beat a pesky Regional Blue team 4-2.

The first game Saturday was against the usually strong Pro Hockey team. The Sharks have had competitive games with Pro Hockey in past years and this game was no different. The Sharks managed to hold a late third period lead only to see Pro Hockey tie the game with 33 seconds left. This was an exciting game with both goalies making key saves to preserve the tie.

Final positioning in the round robin would be determined by the final game against Regional Gold. The Sharks could finish first with a win or as low as 6th with a loss. The girls came out flying and scored on their 1st shift. Both teams traded quality scoring chances throughout and the Sharks scored the game winner with 5 minutes left in the 3rd. An empty net marker made the score 3-1 for the Sharks.

With a 1st place finish in round robin play, the Sharks again faced Pro Hockey in the semi-final. This time, the Sharks came together for their best effort in the tourney and easily handled Pro Hockey 5-0.

The final was a rematch against Regional Gold. This turned out to be a fast paced, end to end game. Unfortunately, Regional was awarded a penalty shot with a little over three minutes to play in the 3rd. The Regional scorer squeezed one through the pads for the game winner. Great game by both teams.

The Canlan Victoria Day Classic featured 8 teams including the Sharks. The Sharks went through round robin play with three straight shutout performances, beating the Edge 5-0, Quick Feet 2-0 and Ontario Ice Breakers 1-0.

The semi-final placed the 1st place Sharks against Ontario Ice Breakers. This turned out to be a very close game. The Sharks managed a 2nd period goal and hung on for a 1-0 win.

The final pitted the Sharks against Regional Blue. After surrendering a 1st shift goal against, the Sharks responded with two quick goals and coasted to a 6-2 final win, capturing the championship trophy.

Congratulations to all players for an enjoyable season.
