The ’98 Minor Atom Ice Sharks looked very much like a well oiled machine during their exhibition win over the Zone from Waterloo last Sunday.
The Ice Sharks’ defense played a very responsible game while the forwards fore checked with more intensity as the game wore on. Justin McCarter opened the scoring at 5:39 of the 1st period on a feed to the slot from Chayse Herrfort. Herrfort would then jump on a rebound at 8:36 of the 2nd period and snap a shot upstairs to put the Sharks up 2-0. The goal was initiated on a nice pass from defense Nic Whiteside to his partner Keenan Conlon who eventually took the shot on net. At 10:51 of the 3rd, McCarter would notch his 2nd goal of the game converting on a beautiful pass from Brett Burrows during a 2 on 1 with Herrfort also drawing an assist on the play. Then at 9:22, Brent West would bury a nice shot to make it 4-0 with assists going to Eric Langridge and Liam Melady. The Zone would then capitalize on an Ice Shark miscue at 7:56 of the 3rd. Burrows would round out the scoring at 3:51, by banging home a goal mouth scramble with line mate Herrfort drawing an assist. The line of Brydon Adams, Ethan Long and Cole McKee created many scoring opportunities but just didn’t get the bounces. The line of Jonathon Baker, Holdyn Lansink and West put together a consistent fore check throughout the game while defender Nicole Zabel utilized an effective poke check, breaking up several Zone opportunities. Branden Bean started the game in net while Tyler Reiner played the last half, both playing very well. The minor atoms are now gearing up for the Northshore Challenge Cup in St. Thomas staring April 25th.
